n & Cole Stores here has named Kerri McCurtain to the new position of food-safety specialist. She is working with store-level employees to elevate the company's current food-safety program, as well as oversee sanitation programs currently in place at the chain's 36 stores. She will also be responsible for creating a model store for the purpose of testing innovations and best practices for later chainwide implementation.

Prior to this, McCurtain worked in the Whatcom County (Wash.) Health Department, where she inspected retail grocery stores and restaurants. She has nine years of experience as an environmental health specialist. McCurtain is an active member of the Washington State Environmental Health Association and the Washington State Board of Registered Sanitarians.

FMI Appoints Safety Director

WASHINGTON -- The Food Marketing Institute here has appointed Tim Weigner to the new position of director of food-safety programs. Weigner was manager of food-safety programs for the FMI. Prior to that, he was a training officer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with responsibilities that encompassed risk communication, food code and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point-based food-safety programs.

In his new position, his responsibilities include developing, publishing and editing the FMI's Supermarket Food-Safety Newsletter, as well as managing training programs and activities associated with the FMI's Food-Protection Certification Program. He also serves as the organization's liaison concerning all food-safety issues. Weigner reports to Jim Hollingsworth, the FMI's vice president of food-safety programs.
