Losey to Step Down At United Wholesale

Losey announced he will retire as president of United Wholesale Grocery here, effective March 31.

United, a subsidiary of Spartan Stores, is a full-service grocery distribution center servicing 500 independently owned Spartan stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

Losey, 61, joined Spartan in 1957. During his 40 years with the company, he has held a variety of positions, including grocery buyer, sales coordinator and director of general merchandise purchasing. He has been in his current post since 1980.

The company said it will not appoint a president to succeed Losey. Instead, Richard VanDyken, United Wholesale operations manager, will succeed Losey in the new position of general manager of operations. VanDyken joined the company in 1960. His successor has not yet been named.

Carr Gottstein Foods Taps Retail Director

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Carr Gottstein Foods, which operates 15 Carrs Quality Centers and eight Eagle Quality Centers, has named Glenn Peterson director of retail operations for Eagle Quality Centers.

He succeeds Moira Paddock, who was named vice president of retail operations. Peterson began his career with Carrs Quality Centers in 1975 as a night stocker and moved on to numerous store-level assignments. Since 1982, he has managed several of Carrs' highest-volume stores. In 1991 and 1993, he received the company's award for most-improved store operations. In 1992, he launched Carrs "Ultimate Catering" department, and in 1994 he worked closely with Carrs private-label company on quality, pricing, sales and distribution. His most recent position was manager of the Carrs Quality Center in Muldoon, Alaska. Peterson reports to Jeff Philipps, senior vice president of the retail division.

Ralphs Names Manufacturing VP

COMPTON, Calif. -- Ralphs Grocery Co. here has appointed George Boyle vice president of manufacturing. Boyle was director of supply chain logistics for Vons Cos.

In this new position, Boyle has management responsibility for all aspects of the company's manufacturing facilities, including creamery, bakery, commissary/deli kitchen and meat. His primary focus is to accelerate product development and sales of Ralphs manufactured products. He reports to Tony Schnug, group senior vice president of support operations.

FDI Picks 5 to Fill Out Board

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- The Food Distributors International here elected five new members to its 28-member board, for three-year terms beginning this year. They are:

Gordon Campbell, executive director of Internationale SPAR Centrale BV, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

John D'Ambrosio, president of Twin County Grocers, Edison, N.J.

Daniel A. Gordon, president of Gordon Food Service, Grand Rapids, Mich.

James B. Meyer, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Richard A. Parkinson, president and chief executive officer of Associated Food Stores, Salt Lake City.
