completion of the merger between Ralphs Grocery Co. and Fred Meyer Inc., the companies have announced two new appointments.

Tony Schnug, formerly group senior vice president of support operation for Ralphs, has been named executive vice president of distribution and manufacturing for Portland, Ore.-based Fred Meyer.

In this newly created position Schnug reports directly to Robert G. Miller, president and chief executive officer of Fred Meyer. He is responsible for all distribution and commercial manufacturing plants operated by the subsidiaries of Fred Meyer.

Schnug, who has over 20 years of retail experience, began working at Ralphs in 1994. He has a batchelor's degree in economics from the University of California Los Angeles.

Larry Ishii has been named vice president of national accounts for Fred Meyer, another newly created position resulting from the merger of the two companies. Formerly the president of national accounts for Ralphs, Ishii will continue to work out of that company's corporate office in Compton, Calif. He now reports to Kenneth Martindale, executive vice president of purchasing and procurement for Fred Meyer.

Ishii started in the supermarket industry in 1967 with Albertson's. He then joined Food 4 Less in 1991 as vice president of general merchandise purchasing. In 1995 he began work at Ralphs in the position that he now leaves.

Ralphs Grocery Co. operates more than 400 stores in California and the Midwest. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fred Meyer Inc.

GMA Fills Communications Slot

WASHINGTON -- Lisa McCue has joined the Grocery Manufacturers of America here as manager of industry communications.

In this newly created position McCue takes on many of the responsibilities of Susan Mirvis, formerly director of communications for GMA. Mirvis left the company earlier this year. McCue, who reports to Gene Grabowski, vice president of communications for GMA, most recently worked as director of communications at the International Fresh-cut Produce Association. During her time here she also worked as a contributing editor for "Produce Business" magazine. Before this, McCue worked for three years as a senior account executive at BC Communications. A graduate of the University of Delaware, she has a batchelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in journalism.

Johnston Names Ogle CEO

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Johnston Industries, a diversified textile manufacturer based here, has named D. Clark Ogle president and chief executive officer, succeeding David L. Chandler, who remains chairman of the board. Ogle was previously managing director of KPMG Peat Marwick's national strategic and operational improvement consulting practice. He is also a former president and chief executive officer of Victory Holdings, Utica, N.Y., a supermarket operator in upstate New York and New England.
