Richard Frede Jr., group vice president of grocery, dairy and frozen foods, has been promoted to senior vice president of logistics and manufacturing. He will take on some the tasks of Robert Drury, who has announced his plans to retire in April. Frede will be responsible for all warehousing, transportation and manufacturing facilities, and will report to Scott Schnuck, president and chief executive officer. Lori A. Caster, vice president and controller of Schnucks, has been named to succeed Frede as the new group vice president of grocery, dairy and frozen foods. Caster will report to Randy Wedel, senior vice president of marketing and merchandising. Schnucks said it will begin a search for her successor as controller in the coming weeks. Mark G. Zimmerman, vice president of information technology, will now be in charge of the systems development and retail systems areas - formerly part of Drury's position - in addition to his current responsibilities. Zimmerman will report to Todd Schnuck, executive vice president.

Molpus to Step Down as President, CEO of GMA

WASHINGTON - C. Manly Molpus will step down as president and chief executive officer of the Grocery Manufacturers Association at year's end, the trade group based here said last week. "After 16 years as CEO of this remarkable organization, I have accomplished my goals, and with the development of a new strategic plan, it will be an appropriate time for me to leave," Molpus said in a prepared statement. GMA said Molpus had informed the group's board of his decision in November. Steve Sanger, chairman and CEO, General Mills, and a past GMA chairman, will chair the search committee to find a successor. Search firm Spencer Stuart will assist in that process, GMA said.

FMI Names Rumachik to Lead Wholesaler Division

WASHINGTON - Food Marketing Institute here has named Jeff Rumachik executive director of FMI's wholesaler division. Rumachik succeeds Jack Block, who retired from FMI at the end of last year. In this role, Rumachik provides overall direction for FMI's wholesaler member segment and manages all aspects of the Wholesaler Advisory Board and its committees. His responsibilities include member retention and recruitment, networking, and identifying and communicating key issues and trends. Rumachik continues to serve as group director of field services, which he has led since March 2000. He joined FMI in 1991.

Bergman Succeeds White as Shoppers President

BALTIMORE - Shoppers Food & Pharmacy here last week that Dick Bergman, currently president of Scott's Food & Pharmacy, Fort Wayne, Ind., has been named to succeed Bill White as president of Shoppers. White previously said he would retire this month. Shoppers Food & Pharmacy and Scott's Food & Pharmacy are Supervalu banners. Bill Gillispie, vice president of marketing and merchandising for the east region of Cub Foods, Stillwater, Minn., also a division of Supervalu, will succeed Bergman as head of Scott's.

Haggen Promotes Wood to Chief Operating Officer

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Haggen, a 32-unit independent grocer here, has announced the promotion of Jeff Wood to the new position of executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. Wood most recently served as the company's senior vice president of administration. He now oversees the company's retail operations, merchandising, marketing, human resources and store development. He reports directly to Dale C. Henley, president and chief executive officer. Wood continues to hold some of his previous responsibilities.
