will "combine corporate and U.S. operating management in a unified structure." Brian Piwek was promoted to president and chief operating officer of the company, reporting to Christian Haub, chairman and chief executive officer. Piwek joined A&P in 1997 as vice chairman of its A&P Canada in 2000, and he came to the U.S. as president and CEO of the company's previous U.S. business unit in 2002. "Through Brian's leadership, we have stabilized our results in the U.S., defined strategies to revitalize our customer offer, and created the optimal management organization to execute those strategies going forward," said Haub. "I will continue working closely with him in our new structure as he drives the ongoing improvement of our U.S. business."

Eric Claus remains president and CEO of A&P Canada.

The company also elevated Mitchell P. Goldstein to executive vice president and will report to Haub. Goldstein joined A&P in 2000 as senior vice president, finance and treasurer, and was named CFO in 2002. He will work with Haub, Piwek and Claus on strategic planning, business analysis, budgeting and cost management for the U.S. and Canadian operations.

ALBERTSONS NAMES WAHLSTROM TO LEAD JEWEL-OSCO

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons here last week named Larry D. Wahlstrom president of the company's Jewel-Osco chain in Chicago. He succeeds Pete Van Helden, who last month was named president and chief executive officer of Albertsons' new California Food Division. Wahlstrom, a 33-year veteran of Albertsons and Jewel-Osco, began his career as a store-level employee at an Osco Drug store in Green Bay, Wis. He most recently was vice president of mergers and integration, with responsibility for integrating Shaw's and Star Markets into Albertsons following that acquisition in April. He also previously served as president of Albertsons' Florida Food Division. He reports to Larry Johnston, chairman, president and CEO, Albertsons, and will be based in Melrose Park, Ill.

FOOD LION APPOINTS LACROIX VP, RETAIL OPERATIONS

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here said last week it has named Rick LaCroix vice president of retail operations. He succeeds Dwayne Gilley, who has retired after 25 years. LaCroix will oversee the operations of about 240 stores in North Carolina and Virginia, and will be responsible for developing retail strategies and leading company initiatives, merchandising, recruiting and staff development, quality assurance, profitability and customer satisfaction. He will report to Elwyn Murray, senior vice president, retail operations. LaCroix joined Food Lion in 2000 and has held several positions, including director of retail operations.

BJ'S NAMES MCDONOUGH TO NEW FINANCIAL POST

NATICK, Mass. -- BJ's Wholesale Club here said last week it had named Paul H. McDonough senior vice president of finance, a newly created position. He will report directly to Frank Forward, chief financial officer, and will be responsible for the controller, treasury, investor relations and tax functions. He was most recently vice president and treasurer of the St. Paul Travelers Companies, St. Paul, Minn.

GMA APPOINTS ARTHUR AS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS VP

WASHINGTON -- The Grocery Manufacturers of America here said last week that Steve Arthur has been named its new vice president of government affairs. Arthur will oversee GMA's state government lobbying activities and manage a variety of industry issues, including tax, energy and transportation policies. Arthur most recently worked for Holcim Inc., a cement supplier and construction services company, where he was the manager of public affairs. He previously served as chief deputy director and acting director for California's Department of Conservation, and began his career working for Pete Wilson during Wilson's terms as a U.S. senator and the governor of California. Arthur, who will join GMA on Jan. 3, succeeds Elizabeth Avery, who recently left to accept a position at PepsiCo.
