Smith had been president and chief executive officer at Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop from 2000 until his resignation earlier this year, and presided over the integration of Stop & Shop and Ahold-owned sister chain Giant Food of Landover, Md. At C&S, he reports to Rick Cohen, chairman and CEO. The other co-president is Ron Wright. "[Smith] will be a key player in overseeing C&S' operations and navigating C&S' future growth," said Cohen in a prepared statement. Mark Gross, who oversaw C&S' Grand Union and Southern Family Markets banners, left the company as co-president in April to launch an investment firm.

Shoppers Names Rodgers Sr. VP of Operations

MINNEAPOLIS - Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, a division of Supervalu here, has appointed Rick Rodgers as senior vice president, operations. Rodgers is accountable for the operational execution of all 64 stores, including merchandising, labor management and expense control. Most recently, Rodgers was senior vice president of merchandising and senior vice president of alternative formats, where he played a key role in the development and opening of the first El Primero Mercado store, which opened in December 2005. No one has been named to succeed him. Rodgers will report to Dick Bergman, president, Shoppers Food and Pharmacy, which operates 64 stores in the Baltimore-Washington region.

Dach Joins Wal-Mart as EVP, Corporate Affairs

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores here has appointed Leslie Dach, 52, to the new position of executive vice president of corporate affairs and government relations, effective late August. He will report to President and Chief Executive Officer Lee Scott, and will serve as a member of the company's executive committee. Dach will be responsible for oversight of the company's communications and government relations, as well as the Wal-Mart Foundation. Prior to joining Wal-Mart, Dach was vice chairman of Edelman, a global public relations and strategic communications firm. For the last year, he has led Edelman's team supporting Wal-Mart's corporate affairs operations.
