aid it named Craig Boyan chief strategic officer. He most recently was manager of the New York office of Monitor Group, Boston, a consulting firm that had been assisting the regional supermarket chain for the past year and a half. The chief strategic officer post at H-E-B is newly created, a spokeswoman for the company told SN. Boyan will report to Charles Butt, chairman and chief executive officer, and will work closely with Bob Loeffler, chief operating offer, on designing a growth strategy for the company. "He will lead a strategic review of all of the company's activities to develop plans for the future," the spokeswoman said. She said the review was necessary as H-E-B's business has become increasingly complicated in recent years with new concepts like Central Market and H-E-B Plus stores.

FMI TAPS PEARSON FOR FOUNDATION, NAMES PETERS VICE PRESIDENT

WASHINGTON -- The Food Marketing Institute Foundation said last week that Ron Pearson, chairman of Hy-Vee, West Des Moines, Iowa, has been elected chairman of the fund-raising organization. He succeeds Jim Ukrop, chairman, Ukrop's Super Markets, Richmond, Va. Pearson will oversee fund-raising and programming for the not-for-profit corporation, which was established in 1996 with a mission of supporting food safety education and information. He will also seek to increase exposure for the organization and its supporters. Pearson, a past chairman of FMI and a former trustee of the foundation, will focus particularly on fund-raising for the endowment of the FMI Food Industry Library, a repository for information on the food industry.

Separately, FMI said it has named Claudia Peters vice president, communications and marketing. Peters, 39, will oversee media and editorial services, creative services and membership communications. She reports to Karen Brown, senior vice president, FMI. Peters most recently was president and chief executive officer of www.myownbusiness.org, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit supporting small businesses. Before that, she was director of corporate communications for The Walt Disney Co., Burbank, Calif. At FMI, Peters succeeds Susan Mirvis, who has joined the Health Care Distribution Management Association, Arlington, Va.
