Pathmark Names Martindale Co-President

it has named Kenneth Martindale as co-president and chief marketing officer, a new position, effective Jan. 1. Martindale, a former executive with Yucaipa-led food retailers Fred Meyer and Smith Food & Drug, joins Frank Vitrano in the office of president. Vitrano will continue as chief executive officer. Martindale, who will lead marketing and merchandising efforts at Pathmark, most recently was chairman and chief executive officer of Intesource, a Phoenix-based provider of sourcing technology and consulting services for retailers. Martindale is also the founder of Orchard Street, a specialty food retailer that was sold in 2003.

Spengler Retires as President of Save Mart

MODESTO, Calif. - Save Mart Supermarkets here said Bob Spengler has retired as president and chief operating officer after 19 years with the company. The company has not designated a successor. Spengler, 65, was named president and COO of the 125-store chain in 2003 after joining the company in 1986 as vice president of FoodMaxx, its price-impact division. Before joining Save Mart, Spengler was an independent operator.

In another change, Sally Sanborn, 62, retired as director of marketing and advertising last week after 23 years with Save Mart. Succeeding her is John Kelley, who will have the new title of senior director of marketing. Kelley, 55, spent the last year as vice president, perishables merchandising, corporate stores, for Nash Finch Co., Minneapolis, after several years as vice president, marketing, for Oasis Markets, a convenience-store chain based in Minneapolis.

Bozzuto's Realigns Duties of Three Directors

CHESHIRE, Conn. - As a result of restructuring the merchandising areas, Bozzuto's, a wholesale distributor based here, has realigned the responsibilities of three directors. Don Anthony, former sales and merchandising manager and manager of store brands, has been promoted to director of merchandising sales; Mark Sprackland, former director of category development, has been promoted to director of category management; and Greg Veneziano, former sales manager for produce and floral, has been promoted to director of produce and floral. All three report to Steve Heggelke, senior vice president of merchandising and procurement.

Co-op Grocers Group Names Shrader CEO

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The National Cooperative Grocers Association has named Robynn Shrader chief executive officer. She succeeds Don McLemore, who retired Dec. 30. McLemore will continue to work with the organization as a consultant on various projects. Shrader had been director of marketing and communications since September 2004. A successor for Shrader has not yet been selected. The NCGA is a member-owned cooperative with 101 independent members nationwide.
