said last week it has selected Richard Saker, currently president and chief operating officer, to be its chief executive officer. He succeeds his father, Joseph Saker, who will continue as chairman. Joseph Saker founded the company in 1958, and has been CEO ever since and chairman since 1971. Richard Saker, who has been with the company since 1969, is on its board of directors as well as the board of the Wakefern Food Corp., Elizabeth, N.J., of which Foodarama is a member and which his father helped found. Foodarama operates 20 ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey.

CASTEEL NAMED REGIONAL MANAGER AT ASSOCIATED

SALT LAKE CITY -- Associated Food Stores here has named Ritchie Casteel regional manager of Associated Retail Stores, a new position. In this role, he will be responsible for Dan's, Dick's, Lin's and Maceys, which are part of the retail division. Previously, Casteel spent 33 years at Albertsons, where he most recently was vice president of operations for the Intermountain Division. Associated Food Stores is a retailer-owned cooperative serving more than 500 grocers in the West.

GMA HIRES MARTIN AS COMMUNICATIONS VP

WASHINGTON -- The Grocery Manufacturers of American here has named Richard P. Martin vice president, communications. Martin succeeds Gene Grabowski, who is no longer with the association. In his new position, Martin will oversee support, communications and marketing efforts. Most recently, he was managing director of the brand and marketing strategy practice at Scient, Salt Lake City. He also co-founded Kids Online America, San Francisco, and worked as the company's chief marketing officer. Over his 15-year career, Martin has managed media relations at United Airlines, Chicago; worked as account supervisor at Edelman Public Relations, Chicago; and was a senior account executive at Burson Marsteller, Washington. He was also a deputy campaign press secretary for Sen. Dianne Feinstein and for former President Clinton.
