DUNCAN JOINS OFFICEMAX AS PRESIDENT, CEO

ITASCA, Ill. -- OfficeMax here said it named former Kroger and Albertsons executive Sam K. Duncan as its new president and chief executive officer. Duncan, 53, most recently was president and CEO of Shopko Stores, Green Bay, Wis. Prior to joining Shopko, Duncan was president of Fred Meyer Inc., a division of Kroger, Cincinnati, from 2001 to 2002. Duncan joined Fred Meyer in 1992 and left in 1998 to become president of Kroger's Ralphs division.

He began his career in 1969 as a clerk at an Albertsons, and moved up to be director of operations before he left in 1992. At Office Max, he succeeds George Harad, who had been serving as the company's interim CEO after Christopher Milliken resigned in February in the wake of an accounting scandal.
