SALT LAKE CITY -- American Stores Co. here said Dick Fredericksen has retired as executive vice president for supply chain implementation, after a 40-year career with the company.

In 1989 he was named senior vice president for statewide marketing, at Lucky's corporate offices in Dublin, Calif., and two years later became executive vice president and general manager of Lucky's San Leandro-based northern California division.

In 1993, he moved to the parent company's offices here to oversee American's move to centralized procurement and became executive vice president for supply chain implementation.

Commenting on Fredericksen's retirement, Vic Lund, chairman and chief executive officer of American, said, "Dick has made contributions to this business that will benefit us for years to come. One of his strengths has always been his quick ability to form a team and motivate people. He's been a successful business manager and a true leader."

American Stores said Fredericksen and his wife plan to return to southern California to spend more time with their family.
