Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands, said net earnings in the 16-week first quarter of 1997, ended April 20, increased 69.4% to $121.35 million (234.4 million guilders), compared with $71.65 million (138.4 million guilders) a year ago. Earnings per share were 70 cents (1.36 guilders), an increase of 23.4% over 57 cents (1.10 guilders) in the year-ago quarter. Sales for the quarter were up 48% to $7.25 billion

Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands, said net earnings in the 16-week first quarter of 1997, ended April 20, increased 69.4% to $121.35 million (234.4 million guilders), compared with $71.65 million (138.4 million guilders) a year ago. Earnings per share were 70 cents (1.36 guilders), an increase of 23.4% over 57 cents (1.10 guilders) in the year-ago quarter. Sales for the quarter were up 48% to $7.25 billion (14.0 billion guilders), compared with $4.92 billion (9.5 billion guilders) in 1996. The company said earnings were favorably affected by its 1996 acquisition of Stop & Shop Cos., Quincy, Mass.
