Weis Markets, Sunbury, Pa., reported its eighth straight quarter of increased profit, with a 3.35% rise in net profit and an 8.98% jump in sales for the first quarter. Sales for the 13-week period ended March 30 rose to $433.2 million from $397.5 million in the year-ago period. Net profit rose to $19.7 million from $19.1 million. Net earnings per share were up to 46 cents from 44 cents.f $3.2 million

f $3.2 million for the first quarter, a 12.5% improvement from the $3.7 million loss a year ago. Sales for the 12 weeks ended March 23 fell 14.1% to $179 million after the September sale of six stores in Richmond, Va., to Hannaford Bros. Same-store sales rose 3.4%.
