Eagle Food Centers, Milan, Ill., said last week it attributed a net loss of $463,000 for the third quarter ended Nov. 1 to lower gross margin dollars resulting from lower sales levels and increased promotional activity, plus onetime costs of $1.2 million related to incremental systems implementation and duplicate systems-related expenses. Sales for the 13-week quarter fell 5.7% to $234.2 million, while same-store sales declined 5.8%. For the nine-month period, net earnings declined 0.5% to $2.7 million, while sales dropped 4.6% to $719.5 million and same-store sales fell 5.3%.
