The wholesaler, which supplies supermarkets in 11 states, celebrated its 125th anniversary last year.

st year's 16-week fourth quarter, an increase of 10.3% when adjusted for the extra week. For stores in operation in both years and adjusted for the same number of weeks, sales increased 6.7% in the quarter, and 3.4% for the year. Giant said full operating results will be released later this month.

Stater Bros. Holdings, Colton, Calif., said sales for the 13-week first quarter ended Dec. 28 were $430.9 million, a decrease of 0.5% compared with $433.4 million in the year-ago quarter. Operating cash flow was $14.5 million in the quarter, compared with $15.8 million in the year-ago quarter. Net income for the quarter was $1.3 million, which reflects an additional interest expense of $1.5 million (after tax) from debt incurred in the July 1997 restructuring. Net income for the year-ago quarter was $4.2 million.

Village Super Market, the Springfield, N.J.-based company that operates 22 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, said net income increased 71% in the second quarter ended Jan. 24, to $1.13 million, or 38 cents per share. Sales in the quarter increased 2.9% to $182.7 million. Same-store sales also increased 2.9% in the quarter.
