Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands, reported significant gains in total worldwide sales and total net earnings for the second quarter and half ended July 14, 1996. Its U.S. operations, which includes the Tops, Edwards, Giant Food Stores, Bi-Lo, Finast and Stop & Shop chains, saw sales climb 14% in the 12-week quarter and 14.9% in the 28-week half over last year's comparable periods. Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands, reported significant gains in total worldwide sales and total net earnings for the second quarter and half ended July 14, 1996. Its U.S. operations, which includes the Tops, Edwards, Giant Food Stores, Bi-Lo, Finast and Stop & Shop chains, saw sales climb 14% in the 12-week quarter and 14.9% in the 28-week half over last year's comparable periods. Operating results for its U.S. arm rose an average of 20.7% in the quarter and 17.9% in the half. The company reported that Tops, Edwards and Giant Food Stores did very well in the periods, while Bi-Lo and Finast turned in slightly lower operating results because of increased competition.
