OKLAHOMA CITY -- Fleming Cos. here said last week it plans to sell Boogaarts Food Stores, a 20-unit corporate chain based in Concordia, Kan.

rming stores in an effort to enhance the competitiveness of the company's independent retailers and improve the company's performance.

In December Fleming said it would close or sell 11 units of Hyde Park Markets, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and in February it disclosed plans to close or sell 21 units of Consumers Food & Drug, Springfield, Mo.

A Fleming spokesman said two of the Hyde Park Markets have been sold and five have been closed, with the other four continuing to operate; he said the company has sold 14 of the 21 Consumers units to independent customers and closed the rest.

In the case of Boogaart's, Fleming said it anticipates selling the stores to independent retailers who already buy from Fleming. Boogaart's volume is estimated at less than $100 million.

Fleming acquired Boogaart's as part of its 1995 acquisition of Scrivner, Oklahoma City, which had bought the chain in the early 1980s.

The spokesman said Fleming will continue to review other chains and individual stores "to make sure they fit our strategic plans."
