tatives in Congress on the issues of estate taxes and interchange fees.

"We are hoping to bombard Congress with messages," said Bill Greer, an FMI spokesman, who noted that interchange fees "are the No. 1 priority of the board" at FMI.

He said the estate-tax issue is particularly timely, as Congress may vote on repealing the levy next month. The industry favors the permanent repeal of the estate tax, which historically had been charged to heirs of family businesses. The tax is currently being phased out until 2011, when it would be reinstated.

FMI has also been promoting congressional awareness of the industry's position on credit card interchange fees, which it said need to be made more transparent.
