MOSCOW, Idaho -- Gary Michael, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Albertsons, has been named interim president of the University of Idaho here, with a mission to help the school out of a financial crunch.

29 million over the last three years.

According to Michael, the university finds itself with a two-year shortfall of approximately $20 million.

Michael, 62, who retired from Albertsons two years ago, will not receive a salary for his university work.

The university intends to begin a search shortly for a permanent successor, Michael said, adding he hopes to be able to turn the presidency over to that successor by January.
