WASHINGTON -- The Food Safety and Inspection Service has started a national survey to determine the extent of retailer participation in posting meat and poultry Nutri-Facts information and labeling perishables with nutrition information.

Lombardi, a spokesman for FSIS.

The survey began on June 12, and a final report is expected by Sept. 29, at which time the agency will review the situation and determine whether or not the Nutri-Facts guidelines should remain voluntary.

"[Surveyors] look for the Nutri-Facts poster first," Lombardi said. "Then if they don't see that, they look for pamphlets or brochures posted nearby, and lastly they look for the label on the package."

Food industry groups, including the Food Marketing Institute, last issued an update of "Meat and Poultry Nutri-Facts" in April.
