WASHINGTON -- Grocery Manufacturers of America here said last week it has named Roger Enrico, chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo, Purchase, N.Y., to lead the association's efforts to have Congress grant China permanent normal trade status.

> The GMA said China's entry into the World Trade Organization is an exceptional opportunity for the food, beverage and consumer products industry. With more than 20% of the world's population and a rapidly growing middle class, according to GMA, China represents a major market for exports.

Enrico said, "Without the full participation of China, the modern world of trade is incomplete. We must every effort to ensure that Congress recognizes that bringing China into the global marketplace is crucial to the interest of the United States."
