WAYNE, N.J. -- Grand Union Co. here said Darrell W. Stine will retire Saturday as executive vice president of operations after a 44-year career with the company.

Grand Union said it will not name a successor to Stine; instead, the chain's four area vice presidents responsible for store operations will report directly to Joseph J. McCaig, president and chief executive officer.

Stine, 59, told SN his resignation was "absolutely voluntary" and had been planned for some time to allow him to spend more time with his family.

Stine joined Grand Union as a part-time clerk in the company's former Washington division, moving on to become store general manager, superintendent of stores, vice president and divisional general manager, regional vice president in charge of the company's former Texas operations and senior vice president in charge of its former New York region. He was named executive vice president of operations in 1994.

Stine's retirement is the third major executive departure at Grand Union in seven months. William C. Louttit resigned late last month as executive vice president and chief operating officer and Ken Baum resigned in September as chief financial officer.
