WAYNE, N.J. -- The Grand Union Co. here started off the picnic season with a deli ad that paired fried chicken and salads.

Next to a platter of fried chicken was a description of the chicken promotion: "Fried Chicken Bonanza. Fresh, never frozen! Four pieces, $2.99; eight pieces, $4.99; 12 pieces, $7.49; 16 pieces, $9.99."

Everyday prices were $3.59, $5.99, $8.99 and $11.99, and regular prices for the salads ranged from $2.49 a pound for coleslaw to $5.99 a pound for Caribbean grain, a source at store level told SN. Officials at the 256-unit chain could not be reached for comment.
