SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. here said sales rose 3.7% to $788.3 million and net income was up 14.3% to $17.8 million for the first quarter ended April 4.

Hugh G. He said Hannaford plans to spend approximately $140 million this year on capital projects to increase net selling area by about 4.4%.

During the quarter, Farrington said, the company opened three new stores (two in the Southeast, one in the Northeast) and completed two Northeast expansions.

The chain said 1998 will continue to see the rollout of new merchandising ideas, particularly in fresh departments, plus an investment in customer service, technology and capital expenditures, and reduction of operating costs.
