Ruddick said earnings per share could be slightly lower than the 26 cents reported in the fourth quarter or the 29 cents reported in last year's first quarter. Dickson said the anticipated declines are attributable to weaker performance at American & Efird, Ruddick's industrial sewing thread manufacturing and distribution subsidiary.

Ruddick said full first-quarter results are scheduled for release Jan. 23.
