HARRIS TEETER SALES, OPERATING PROFIT RISE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ruddick Corp. here said sales and operating profit rose for its Harris Teeter supermarket subsidiary for the second quarter and first half ended March 30.0.6 million, comparable-store sales increased 1%, and operating profit grew 7.8% to $22 million. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ruddick Corp. here said sales and operating profit rose for its Harris Teeter supermarket subsidiary for the second quarter and first half ended March 30.

0.6 million, comparable-store sales increased 1%, and operating profit grew 7.8% to $22 million. For the half, sales increased 3.6%, comps rose 0.3%, and operating profit improved 8.3% to $46.1 million. Ruddick's earnings per share were 31 cents for the quarter and 59 cents for the half, vs. 19 cents and 41 cents, respectively, in the previous year.
