WASHINGTON -- The Food Marketing Institute's 1995 Supermarket Pharmacy Conference will focus on ways to deal with the changing health care industry, the trade organization announced recently.

San Antonio, said supermarket pharmacists need to stay abreast of new health care products, services and policies. "Disease management, vertical integration and biotech drugs. These emerging aspects of health care indicate that change continues at breakneck speed -- and supermarket pharmacists can't afford to be left behind," said Fogle in a press release.

The conference will feature five general sessions spotlighting different areas of change in the health care marketplace:

· J. Ian Morrison, president of the Institute for the Future, will address the future of the health care system and outline the changes community pharmacy can expect as dramatic shifts in health care occur. · Kathleen A. Johnson, associate professor of the University of California School of Pharmacy, will focus on indicators to measure the outcome of patient care. She will show how outcome data can be collected and documented in the community pharmacy setting. · John Harris, senior consultant of Blue Cross of California, will discuss the current use of clinical guidelines in health care decision-making. He will give some insight into ways the health care community develops protocols to make wise use of limited medical and economic resources. · Roger Davis, member of the board of directors and secretary-treasurer of Rx Care of Tennessee, will review state health-care reform initiatives designed to provide better service and hold back in escalating costs. This session will include discussion about alternatives to Medicaid and measures to take care of the uninsured. · Donald Hoscheit, president of Hoscheit Consultants, will look at the changing economics of community pharmacy. He will review current reporting tools that measure productivity and profitability. He'll also suggest new ways to evaluate pharmacy operations and respond appropriately in the evolving marketplace. The conference will provide concurrent workshops on how supermarket pharmacies can be involved in disease management, biotech drugs and pharmacy networks.
