HEARING HELD ON ALLEGED LABOR ABUSE OF SUPERMARKET JANITORS

LOS ANGELES -- Elected officials and community leaders here were scheduled to hear testimony over the weekend from supermarket janitors about alleged abuses of labor laws by cleaning subcontractors used by southern California retail operators.

y from Eric Murray, assistant director of the U.S. Department of Labor; Art Lujan, California labor commissioner; and Roger Miller, assistant chief labor commissioner, about allegations of tax fraud, failure to secure payment of workers' compensation and failure to pay minimum wage by the subcontractors.

According to MALDEF, the purpose of the hearing was to help state legislators develop recommendations for putting a stop to allegedly unlawful subcontractor activities.
