SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Two California-based retailers have become the latest supermarket chains to accept the American Express card.

Hughes Family Markets, Irwindale, Calif., has also begun taking American Express. The retailer operates 53 stores in the Southern California market.
Among the retailers who accept American Express are Giant Food, Landover, Md.; Bruno's, Birmingham, Ala.; Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif.; and Smitty's Super Valu, Phoenix.
