THE WORLDWIDE RETAIL EXCHANGE, Minneapolis, said last week John Lewis, a U.K.-based retailer; and the Otto-Group, a Germany-based mail order group, will join the exchange. The two new members bring the total number of exchange members to 37, with combined sales of $577 billion worldwide. "The addition of these new members -- both leaders in their respective markets -- reinforces the WWRE's strong position as the world's premier exchange for retailers and suppliers," said Colin Dyer, newly appointed WWRE chief executive officer. "The expanded membership base of WWRE is a win-win for all involved, from our retail members to suppliers to consumers." John Lewis operates 25 department stores, 130 Waitrose supermarkets and ancillary manufacturing activities. The company also has interests in farming, textile printing, spinning and weaving, fitted kitchen furniture and bedding, and mail-order wines. The company had revenues of $6 billion in 1999. The Otto-Group comprises 83 companies in 23 countries, and is active in all the major European markets as well as in America and Asia. Otto posted revenues of $18 billion, last year In the same period, Otto reported on-line sales of $200 million.
