CHICAGO -- Independent Grocers Alliance here has revamped its presence on the Internet with an upgraded World Wide Web site that goes live this week.
The wholesaler-owned alliance uses the site primarily to enhance communications among its 3,600 members worldwide, but several new and planned features are targeted to consumers.
"We believe in the Internet. We believe it will be one of our most useful tools in the future," said Kevin Burkum, director of communications.
Among the new features available at IGA's home page on the web (http://www.igainc.com/) is an international section that provides statistical information about IGA stores abroad. The section will detail the number and location of stores in a particular country as well as plans for expansion.
Also new is a "Grand Openings" page that lists new store openings, remodels and new construction.
Burkum said the site contains more sophisticated graphics and information will be updated regularly. "The new page is simpler and cleaner. It's information-rich," he said.
Enhancements to existing pages include "Hometown Proud," which will outline IGA's involvement in community events, and "IGA Brands," which will offer recipes using IGA's private-label products. Eventually, Burkham said, IGA will develop an on-line couponing program and possibly a home shopping and delivery service.
