J. SAINSBURY APPOINTS GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE

LONDON -- J. LONDON -- J. Sainsbury plc, the United Kingdom's second-largest food retailer, has named Dino Adriano group chief executive, effective March 1, 1998.

ecutive from David Sainsbury, who continues as the company's executive chairman.

In his new position, Adriano will continue to oversee Sainsbury's core British supermarket business. In addition, all operating companies will report to him and he will chair the group's committees on investment and management responsibility. In addition to Adriano's appointment, Sainsbury plc said David Bremner will become deputy chief executive, beginning next March. Bremner will continue to oversee Sainsbury's U.S. businesses: Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass.; its 20% stake in Giant Food, Landover, Md.; and its hardware chain, Homebase.

He also will assume some group responsibilities of Adriano's.David Sainsbury will oversee group policy and strategy.

"These appointments complete the organizational changes I initiated at the beginning of this year," the chairman said, adding they should help to further ensure Sainsbury's recent recovery in profits and sales develops into strong growth.
