CHICAGO -- Jewel-Osco stores here recently ran a frozen food promotion that offered a trip for four to Jamaica, along with other prizes.
Twelve brands of frozen food participated in the contest: Morningstar Farms, Tropicana and Dole juices, Kellogg's Eggo Waffles, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, Tombstone pizza, Pictsweet Deluxe Vegetables, Swanson 4-Compartment dinners, Michelina's Entrees, On-Cor Entrees, Sea Pak, Lender's bagels and Pepperidge Farm Garlic Bread.
In addition, two of the products -- Pictsweet vegetables and Pepperidge Farm garlic bread -- offered "buy one, get one" deals. All of the prices on the items were hot, and consumers had 11 days to purchase them.
The "Easy Home Meals" logo of the National Frozen Food Association, Harrisburg, Pa., appeared in the ads, one of which took the whole back page of the Chicago Tribune food section on Oct. 4, along with the NFFA's signature penguin.
This sweepstakes, called "Fresh to Your Freezer 2000," will award 100 $50 gift certificates to shop at Jewel as second prize, and three freezers as third prize. Ads also ran on radio.
Customers entered the contest automatically if they purchased six of the 12 brands using their Jewel Preferred Card.
The Midwest Frozen and Refrigerated Food Association, Naperville, Ill., which coordinated the promotion, did not return SN's calls for comment.
