anners, to bring a festive air to its in-store bakery departments.

King Kullen advertised the promotion for the first two weeks in October, devoting a third of a page in its advertising circular.

The ad was headlined "Octoberfest Bakery Taste Treats." Featured in the ad was a photo of a Black Forest Cake and a photo of a made-from-scratch German apple ring. The Black Forest cake was offered at a special, $1-off, price of $5.99. The apple ring was $4.59.

Also featured in the ad were German black bread, $2.99, and giant soft pretzels, 99 cents each, reportedly baked in-store. Im-ported German pfeffernesse cookies and fruit stollen were brought in especially for the Oct-oberfest promotion, said a source familiar with the program. Their respective retail prices were $1.89 a package, and $3.59 each.

Officials at King Kullen's corporate offices here could not be reached for comment on the promotion. But the campaign was apparently a success because a local observer said King Kullen is considering doing a store-wide Octoberfest promotion next year.
