NEW YORK -- Child magazine here named Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., as the most family-friendly supermarket chain in the United States in a ranking in its August issue.
nkings were based on questionnaires sent to retailers asking about their family-friendly amenities. The rest of the Top 10, in order, were:
No. 2, Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh. Attributes included its Be a Smart Shopper educational program for kids, its Eagles Nest kids' activity centers, and other kid-focused offerings.
No. 3, Publix, Lakeland, Fla. Cited for its in-store computer-training centers for kids and other activities;
No. 4, Ukrop's, Richmond, Va. Offers Kid Kuisine cooking classes, kids menus, and "more than 30 kid-friendly events annually."
No. 5, Harris Teeter, Matthews, N.C. The chain carries a "Harry the Dragon" line of kids' foods, a Web site for kids, and donates money to local schools.
No. 6, Hy-Vee, West Des Moines, Iowa. Hosts weekly kids' nights, maintains a Kid Zone Web site, offers healthy-cooking classes for kids and kids' menu.
No. 7, Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas. Launched the Whole Kids organic line for children, offers kids' cooking tips on its Web site and grab-and-go natural lunches for kids.
No. 8, Farmer Jack, Detroit. Plans up to 10 kids' events per year, offers other kid-friendly services and activities.
No. 9, Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, Boulder, Colo. Offers children's cooking classes, pregnancy yoga classes, and products free of preservatives and other additives.
No. 10, (tie) IGA, Chicago; and Raley's, Sacramento, Calif. IGA hosts annual KidsFest and other activities; Raley's gives nutritional store tours for kids, and is active in many community events.
