MARSH TIES FLAT COMPS TO RIVAL STORE OPENINGS

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marsh Supermarkets here said the company's nearly flat comparable-store sales for the third quarter ended Jan. 5 were due in part to an unprecedented number of competitive openings.

Net income for the quarter declined 10.5% to $3.4 million, and earnings per share were 38 cents, compared with 42 cents in last year's third quarter.

Year-to-date, sales rose 8.3% to $1.3 billion, comps were up 2.9%, net income increased 21.1% to $11.5 million and earnings per share were $1.29, compared with $1.05 in the previous year's first 40 weeks.
