HONOLULU -- Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan, founder of Foodland Super Market Ltd., Hawaii's first supermarket, died here at St. Francis Medical Center at the age of 89.
companies, including Foodland Super Market, Food Pantry and Kalama Beach Corp., collectively operate nearly 100 retail stores in Hawaii. Sullivan also founded McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii and of Ireland.
An active member of his community and a philanthropist, Sullivan was recognized by two different U.S. presidents for his humanitarian contributions. He founded and was a board member of many charities.
Sullivan is survived by his wife, Joanna; daughters, Kitty (Wo), Jenai (Wall), and Colleen; son, Patrick; and five grandchildren.
