May joined Nash Finch in June 1996 and became chief operating officer last January. He could not be reached for comment last week.

Industry observers said he may have opted to leave Nash Finch to allow Marshall to install his own management team.

Prior to joining Nash Finch May spent eight years with Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich., starting in 1988 as director of finance and planning and ending in 1996 as vice president, procurement, distribution, MIS and customer service.
