new processor has fewer transfer points from store register to approval network.

Megafoods will also introduce a check-authorization network when it rolls out the new processor. The system will allow each store to access a centralized negative check file.

The retailer is currently pilot-testing the new processor, from SPS Payment Systems, Riverwoods, Ill., in one store and plans to have the entire chain on-line by the end of this month.

Robert Stratton, director of management information systems for Megafoods, said the retailer made the switch because its previous processor did not provide timely service.

"Down time was too extensive," he said. "It had too many points of failure and was not responding fast enough."
