In 1999, Migros installed self-checkout technology from NCR, Dayton, Ohio, in five stores, offering shoppers the option to scan, bag and pay for purchases without cashier assistance.

Migros also installed a Web-based kiosk, also from NCR. The retailer expects to have 300 Web kiosks installed in its stores by the end of this year.

As with its traditional checkout lanes, Migros captures transaction data from the new self-checkout systems for use in its data-warehouse applications.
