NEW YORK -- The Farberware Clarion collection of handblown glassware made its supermarket debut at A&P's Food Emporium stores here this month. "It's a very nice, light handblown product that we've never carried," said a Food Emporium store manager, who did not want to be identified. Sales during the week of May 13, when the program was launched, were "pretty good," the manager added. Executives at A&P, Montvale, N.J., declined to comment.

Food Emporium is the first supermarket chain in the nation to offer the program, according to Maureen Lyon, vice president, Excel Associates, Garden City, N.Y., supplier of the line. The retailer is selling 10 pieces of the 15-item line, which Excel introduced at the Housewares Show in Chicago in January, over 10 weeks. Items include a salad bowl, brandy glass, set of four serving bowls, champagne glasses, mugs and wine goblets.

Each piece or set of items sells for $12.99. But shoppers who use a Bonus Club scanner card are charged $9.99 for each glassware purchase.
