New and remodeled stores in the Stop & Shop and Giant chains last year began taking on a new look as part of parent Ahold's mission to turn retail banners into powerful consumer brands.

For Giant, with more than 180 stores in the Washington-Baltimore area, the new look is arriving as part of a three-year program to replace or renovate 100 stores. Stop & Shop's new look is coming as part of renovations and new store builds.

According to Larry Benjamin, chief operating officer of Ahold USA, the company is moving away from a “cookie cutter” style of store sizes and is generally building stores smaller than in the past. Inside, however, the stores are uniform to the point where Giant and Stop & Shop are indistinguishable but for their names.
