'Free Farmed' Label Awarded

WASHINGTON -- The American Humane Association has awarded its first "Free Farmed" certification for a pork product to Quebec, Canada-based Du Breton, a natural, antibiotic- and growth hormone-free pork producer. Du Breton's natural pork roasts, chops, medallions and fillets recently entered the U.S. market through King's Supermarkets on the East coast, as well as Whole Foods, Wild Oats and other select retailers. The "free farmed" tag, which is audited by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service, certifies that farm animals are raised in a humane manner and according to animal welfare standards developed by AHA. As part of the certification process, an independent Farm Animal Services inspector checks a company's farms, facilities, procedures and documentation.
