FISHERS, N.Y. -- Growers in the country's second largest apple-producing state have launched a multimedia advertising campaign supporting a larger-than-average harvest of the most popular varieties.

s the New York Apple Association estimates the crop will be 24 million bushels, a big rebound from last year's growing season, which yielded only 16 million bushels, according to officials.

"This year is shaping up to give us one of the best harvests in recent memory," said Jim Allen, NYAA president.

McIntosh will capture 19% of the state's total production, followed by Empire with 11%. Other major varieties in descending order are Red Delicious, Rome, Cortland and Idared.

Apple consumption is on the rise in part due to publicity from university research proving that apples can help fight cancer, improve breathing for asthma sufferers, strengthen bones and help dieters lose weight, Allen said of the ads' focus.

New York has 695 apple orchards on 45,000 acres, NYAA statistics show.
