Consumers Support Labels on Beef

American consumers support country-of-origin labeling on beef products, according to a national survey sponsored by the National Cattleman's Beef Association (NCBA) here.

The survey, conducted by McLean, Va.-based Wirthlin Worldwide, found that 78% of the 1,000 American consumers polled support country-of-origin labeling. Of those, most were women -- still the primary household shopper.

While consumers typically assume that beef products containing a stamp from the U.S. Department of Agriculture originate from U.S. cattle, about 15% of beef sold in the United States is imported from other countries, according to NCBA findings.

Congress has approved a six-month study to examine the benefits and costs of country-of-origin labeling and the feasibility of rescinding the USDA quality grade for imported meat.
