ConAgra Plans New Pork Plant

Refrigerated Foods Cos. here plans to build a new pork processing plant with complete capability to produce case-ready products.

The company said the planned Swift & Co. pork plant will be built in either Indiana or Kentucky at a site yet to be selected. It will replace a plant in Louisville, Ky.

The new facility should more than double the Louisville plant's production, bringing processing up to 15,000 hogs per day, from the current 7,000 hogs per day.

The company also will construct a new plant to further process cattle hides in Texas. ConAgra said that new plant is designed to improve profit margins in beef processing.

"The new plants underscore our commitment to these core meat products' businesses. We're restructuring them to make them more competitive," said Leroy O. Lochman, president and chief operating officer of ConAgra Refrigerated Foods Cos.

Central Launches Shrimp Line

NORTHFIELD, Ill. -- Seafood distributor Central Seaway Co. here is rolling out a new line of three gourmet products featuring shrimp in pasta sauce.

The products, geared for the value-added seafood segment, are distributed and merchandised frozen, and are available to retailers nationwide, according to the company. Each item is packed in a 12-ounce sauce pouch with 20 to 22 shrimp, frozen and then placed inside a retail box.

The three varieties are alfredo sauce with shrimp, wine basil sauce with shrimp and garlic butter sauce with shrimp. The suggested retail is $4.99.

"As Americans become more taste and health conscious, they want gourmet shrimp contained in easy-to-use sauce," said Dave Bennett, marketing manager for Central Seaway. The products can be prepared in the pouch by either heating in boiling water or a microwave oven.
