e Food Emporium division has opened a 35,000-square-foot concept store, underneath New York City's Queensboro Bridge. The new BridgeMarket unit is modelled to resemble old-time, open-air market stalls with whimsical names like "The Floral Shoppe," where wooden barrels of fresh flowers are placed among brass lampposts; as well as "The Fruit and Vegetable Stand" and "The Corner Deli."

The addition is described as a "flagship enterprise" by officials with the Montvale, N.J.-based retailer, which operates 20 other Food Emporium stores in Manhattan.

Bi-Lo Settles Vidalia Violations

ATLANTA -- Bi-Lo Foods, Mauldin, S.C. attributed the mislabeling of imported onions as trademarked Vidalia onions to "an honest mistake" in product coding, and has agreed to pay a $120,000 fine over two years, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Future signage for the onions must also include a Vidalia trademark certification mark.

The retailer was cited after state inspectors discovered six units selling Peruvian and Chilean sweet onions marked as Vidalias, a violation of the state's Vidalia Onion Act of 1986. The onions are grown exclusively in a single region in Georgia, and zealously protected. There was "no intent to misrepresent" the product, said Jon Wilken, Bi-Lo president and chief executive officer, in a statement.
