H-E-B Will Install New Scanners
om the H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here said the chain will begin installing new front-end, optical scanning equipment in more than 200 stores in Texas this month. The installation is expected to take several years. The retailer will be installing a Fujitsu Model 9900 multi-optic fixed scanner manufactured by Fujitsu-Transaction Solutions, Dallas. Terms of the agreement between H-E-B and Fujitsu were not released. Fujitsu won the H-E-B contract after participating in a six-month pilot program of comparative fixed-scanner products.
A&P Joins UCCNet
MONTVALE, N.J. -- Officials from A&P here said the retailer has joined UCCNet, Lawrenceville, N.J., a nonprofit organization that provides item registration and data synchronization based on industry-developed standards. "A&P has always been committed to doing business electronically with its suppliers and other trading partners, using industry-accepted standards," said Harrison Lewis, vice president of data management, A&P. "UCCNet allows us to integrate these standards into our e-commerce system and truly take advantage of the Internet by bringing added efficiency to our supply chain." UCCNet will act as a checkpoint within A&P's trading community, ensuring that all product information is standards compliant. UCCNet will also act as a repository for A&P's retail chains to "pull" standardized item information and integrate it into its product maintenance systems.
Ahold Implements Space Management System
ZAANDAM, Netherlands -- Royal Ahold here said it is implementing a new space management software system to help manage 615 stores in Spain. The system is from JDA, Scottsdale, Ariz., and is called Intactix pro. Pablo Alapont, head of merchandising at Ahold Supermarkets in Spain, said in a prepared statement that the retailer will use the new system to help manage floor and shelf space. "The implementation of JDA's space-planning solution at our stores in Spain is expected, in the short term, to allow efficient management of floor space. In the long term, it will help us minimize out-of-stocks, facilitate customer buying processes, increase their average spending and systematically structure our day-to-day internal processes," Alapont said.
