Baker is president and chief executive officer of Baker's Supermarkets, Omaha, Neb., which merged with Fleming in 1992. He was honored by Fleming for successfully building his parents' neighborhood grocery business into a regional leader of 15 stores. Baker's has also distinguished itself for its high level of community service, Fleming said.

Harvey has been president of Fleming's Lincoln, Neb., division since 1984. A 36-year veteran of Fleming, he has held a variety of positions at the company, including Lincoln division president from 1974 to 1982 and president of the San Antonio division from 1982 to 1984.

The Chairman's Award, Fleming's highest honor, is presented annually to the operating unit leader who has performed the most outstanding work in all aspects of his or her responsibilities during the past year.

FMI Honors Hawaii Executive

WASHINGTON -- The Food Marketing Institute here has honored Richard C. Botti, executive director of the Hawaii Food Industry Association, with its Donald H. MacManus Award.

The award recognizes state association executives who have shown leadership in public affairs, industry relations and community service. Since founding the Hawaii organization in 1970, Botti has been actively involved in solid-waste concerns in the industry. Moreover, he represented the association on a committee formed by the state governor to aid victims of the recent earthquake in Japan.

D'Agostino Helps Feed Elderly

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- D'Agostino Supermarkets' annual "Round-Up for Citymeals" program to feed the house-bound elderly raised $118,000 this year, up from $46,000 last year.

Customers gave more than $112,000 by "rounding up" their orders to the nearest dime or dollar or more.

The company here contributed a portion of the profits from the sale of all President's Choice and D'Agostino products during the campaign. The retailer also gave greeting cards to customers and schoolchildren to be decorated and sent to the elderly along with their meals.

D'Agostino used its own funds to promote the program by distributing posters, brochures and buttons to its stores, along with prizes for the associates at the stores that brought in the most donations.

The Round-Up for Citymeals program has been an annual event at D'Agostino since 1989.

BBC Set to Feature King Kullen

WESTBURY, N.Y. -- King Kullen Grocery Co. here is featured in a documentary on the history of the supermarket industry that was filmed by the British Broadcasting Co.

The special, scheduled to air later this year, focuses on the origins of the industry and its development up to the present. Company President Bernard D. Kennedy was interviewed by the BBC.

King Kullen was founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, Kennedy's uncle. The chain is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as the first grocery store to incorporate all facets of a modern supermarket. King Kullen currently operates 47 stores in Queens, Long Island and Staten Island.

Three Leaders Honored by IGA

CHICAGO -- IGA here has presented three food industry leaders with J. Frank Grimes Founder's Awards for extraordinary achievement. They are:

George W. Koch, a former president and chief executive officer of the Grocery Manufacturers of America. He is currently a partner with the law firm Kirkpartick & Lockhart, Washington. He worked to preserve IGA's benefits trust last year.

John Hunter, executive vice president and principal operating officer, international, of Coca-Cola Co., Tokyo. He helped IGA establish IGA University, a retail training program, in the Pacific Rim last year.

Tong Louie, chairman and chief executive officer of H.Y. Louie Co., Vancouver, British Columbia, and vice chairman and director of IGA Canada. He brought IGA to Canada in 1955 and has been active in the organization for 40 years.
