Newell Posts Record Sales, Net

o. here has reported record sales and earnings for the second quarter ended June 30. Sales were $801.9 million, up from $735.1 million in 1996. Net income rose to $77.8 million, or 49 cents per share, up from $67.7 million, or 43 cents per share, a year ago. The company attributed the increase in sales to its recently acquired Rolodex, Kirsch and Rubbermaid Office Products businesses and to strong back-to-school shipments. Newell, a manufacturer of housewares, hardware and tools, home furnishings and office products, had 1996 sales of $2.9 billion.

Volume Up at Mead in Quarter

DAYTON, Ohio -- Second-quarter sales for the Mead Corp. here were up 5%, to $1.32 billion, from $1.26 billion a year ago. However, net earnings for the quarter, which ended June 29, fell to $47.8 million, or 90 cents per share, from $67.1 million, or $1.26 per share, a year ago. Mead cited decreased distribution volume and lower prices for paper and corrugated products as reasons for the decline in earnings. Mead, which makes paper, pulp and wood products, packaging and storage items primarily for school and office use, recorded sales of $4.7 billion in 1996.
